WHO AM I?

museum of film and television.jpg

Hello there! My name is Ethan Williamson, and I'm a 24-year-old film enthusiast. I recently completed my MSc in Film Studies at the University of Edinburgh. In 2021 I graduated from the University of Stirling with a First-Class BA (Hons) degree in Film and Media.

I have an avid interest in Film Theory, Film-Philosophy and Posthumanism. Outwith these interests, I'm a music lover with a passion for rock and metal, and I'm a long-suffering supporter of Hibernian football club.

FILM OF THE MONTH

The Fly.jpg

THE FLY (David Cronenberg, 1986)

Until very recently, the only Cronenberg film I had seen was Dead Ringers (1988), which I utterly adored. Recently, I watched Videodrome (1983), Scanners (1981) and The Fly (1986) and was astounded I hadn't pursued these films sooner. Most striking to me about Cronenberg's films is his set design; in both Dead Ringers and The Fly, it is the empty spaces which are utilised to show the utter deterioration of the characters bodies and minds. His attention to detail is stunning.

THE APPENDIX (Liam Konemann, 2021)

Liam Konemann's description of trans-masculinity is one of great tenderness, love and joy. So often, being transgender is something to be kept hidden, secret and shameful but Konemann's pocket-sized book was all it takes to reframe my transness in a positive light. He argues that being transgender is something to be proud of, something to celebrate. After all, "I am the person I always wanted to be. How can that be anything other than joyful?" (p. 57).
